Melissa Kornock (Hatfield/North Penn) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week, the second straight Crimson Hawks player to receive the honor, as it was announced by the conference office on Monday, September 26. 2011.
Kornock follows fellow senior forward Heather Robbins (Frederica, DE/Polytech), who earned the award last Monday.
Kornock scored five goals and also recorded three assists for a total of thirteen points to help lead IUP to a 3-0 week with wins over East Stroudsburg, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Gannon. She tallied at least two points in each game, including a pair of game-winning goals.
She started the week last Tuesday by scoring twice and dishing out two assists in a 5-1 win over East Stroudsburg. With the score tied 1-1, she broke it by scoring back-to-back goals. She then netted one goal in Thursday’s 4-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan and capped her week by going for two more goals and an assists in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Gannon. After the Golden Knights had taken an early 1-0 lead, her first goal of the contest tied the game 1-1 less than three minutes after Gannon had taken the lead.
Kornock and the Crimson Hawks (6-0-1, 4-0-1) will face a tough battle on Wednesday, as they host Edinboro at the South Campus Field. IUP and the Fighting Scots are each ranked regionally, with Edinboro ahead by just one spot.
