Diane Klein, professor emeritus in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Services, recently published the second edition of her textbook on spoken communication in students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
The textbook is entitled Spoken Communication for Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Multidisciplinary Approach.
This edition represents a massive revision, with over half the content being new. It includes updated information to keep up with advances in cochlear implants and new instructional strategies. It includes specific strategies for eliciting speech sounds and new suggestions for working with older students. The book represents current best practices, promoting a multidisciplinary team approach to fostering spoken communication skills in this population.
During the revision process, Klein also gave her students a unique learning experience. Students and faculty in the Deaf Education program worked closely with Dr. Klein to review the drafts of her chapters prior to submission. Students learned about the publication process; the roles of authors, reviewers, and editors; and gained insight into the time and dedication that it takes to write a textbook.
