The Student Marketing Association (SMA) at the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology (ECOBIT) visited New York City from March 31–April 2, 2011, to attend a marketing workshop and to network with Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) alumni.

Planet Hollywood’s director of marketing for Broadway shows led the marketing workshop for the club.
“Our presenter from Broadway gave us a great perspective about numbers,” said Abbie Tyler, a senior Marketing major and SMA president. “Broadway has potential to reach out to the millions of tourists each month. Finalizing that ticket sale to each and every one of them is the goal. A creative, motivated, and intelligent marketer will succeed in reaching this goal."
SMA students attended two different networking events during their stay. The first was a PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) networking event with remarks from IUP alumni Ric Clark, CEO of Brookfield Financial Properties LP, and Andrew Sandberg, a senior associate at PwC.
The second was at the club Angels and Kings, in which SMA students networked with IUP alumni, including Florence Mauchant, managing director at HT Capital Advisors, LLC, and recent inductee into the Business Hall of Distinction.
“It was a great opportunity to see how many IUP alumni are willing to help the current students in their future endeavors. It was also interesting to see that many alumni live in New York City,” said Kelly Welde, a junior Marketing major and SMA secretary.
The trip helped the students experience New York City with a marketer’s perspective and exposed them to the lifestyle and competition companies face in a large city, Tyler said.
The students also toured Battery Park, China Town, the Empire State Building, Wall Street, and the World Trade Center Memorial during the trip, she said.
