The Eberly College of Business and Information Technology (ECOBIT) hosted a student leadership retreat for the officers of the college’s student organizations on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at IUP in Stephenson Hall.
Abbie Tyler, Rich Widdowson and Noelle Kramer (left to right), ECOBIT students, participate in a team-building exercise at the COBSAC leadership retreat.
ECOBIT deans Dr. Robert Camp, Dr. Dorothy Gracey, and Cynthia Strittmatter hosted the retreat to aid in the professional development of the leaders of the College of Business Student Advisory Council (COBSAC), which represents ECOBITS’s fourteen student organizations.
“The student leaders of Eberly contribute significantly to the operations of the college and to the advancement of their individual student organizations,” said Strittmatter, ECOBIT assistant dean. “This leadership workshop was held to help them in developing skills to assist them in their respective roles and to provide an opportunity for the leaders to network with officers of other organizations.”
Betsy Sarneso, assistant director of the Center for Student Life, Terry Appolonia, dean of students and associate vice president for student development, and Kelly Ogiba, a graduate assistant at the center, led informational sessions about professional communication, success, and time management. The ECOBIT deans also led an accreditation discussion and mission statement exercise.
The retreat has also proved to be a beneficial experience for the organizations and helped the leaders to form better relationships with one another and with administration, said Sarah Wagner, COBSAC president.
“The retreat also allowed us to take time to learn more about our own leadership techniques and those of others,” Wagner said. “We’ve already started implementing what we’ve learned into our individual organizations.”
