Theater-by-the-Grove and Music Theater at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will swing into the holiday season with Irving Berlin’s classic family musical, White Christmas. The show opens on December 2, 2010, with performances slated for December 2-4 at 8:00 p.m. and a matinee on Sunday, December 5, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be presented on the stage of Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
Based on the popular film classic of the same name, the story begins at the end of the Second World War, where two of the show’s lead characters, Bob and Phil, met as soldiers. Soon after, we are taken into the 1950s, where Bob and Phil have risen to the level of a highly successful entertainment duo.
The team is booked to perform during the holidays at a Vermont lodge, and soon meet Betty and Judy, a sister performance act that is equally as successful. The duo of duos strike up a romantic relationship, and simultaneously find the lodge, which has fallen on hard times, is owned by none other than the Bob and Phil’s former army commander.
White Christmas’ amazing score by Irving Berlin features some of the greatest songs ever written, including “Blue Skies,” “Count Your Blessings,” “I Love a Piano,” and certainly “White Christmas,” the most popular-selling single of all time.
The director of the show, Lisa Ann Goldsmith, commented on the show, saying it’s not just about songs and the wish for a white Christmas, “It’s about relationships.”
One of the most important aspects of the 1950s that the young actors had to recognize was the simplicity of the people and the time. Goldsmith explained, “We’ve lost some of that one-on-one human interaction that was presented so clearly in the 1950s. Today, we’re not used to people’s feelings being so simple. Technology can take away from openly communicating with someone face-to-face.”
Goldsmith, a member of the IUP theater faculty, added, “It’s a lovely show, and it’s perfect for the holiday season. It’s warm. It’s funny. It’s touching—a great Christmas gift. There’s a reason that pieces like this hold up for so long.”
Tickets for White Christmas are available at the Hadley Union Building, located on Pratt Drive of the IUP campus. Seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour before each performance.
Tickets are priced at $15 for regular admission, $13 for senior citizens and groups of 15 or more, and $9 for children and students. Tickets may also be purchased with a credit card by calling the HUB Box Office at 724-357-1313, or bought directly online.
