IUP groups are participating in a number of events surrounding Veterans Day 2010, the national holiday honoring veterans of the armed services. See a list of activities:
The IUP Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) will hold its flag-raising ceremony at 6:00 a.m. in front of Pierce Hall, 1140 Maple Street.
The parade will start at 10:50 a.m. at Fifth and Philadelphia streets and head west to the courthouse for a brief ceremony. Participating in the parade will be the IUP Veterans Organization, which will have a float, and the IUP ROTC, which will also set off the cannon. The IUP Veterans Organization is a student club that serves veterans.
Find more information about community activities Thursday on the Center for Student Success website: “IUP to Honor Veterans during November.”
The IUP Veterans Organization will hold a bake sale from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the Oak Grove, by the library. Proceeds will benefit club activities.
The IUP Veterans Organization will host a social from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Dingbats in the Indiana Mall. All members of the IUP community and their families are invited.
All student-veterans are invited to attend the Crimson Huddle at 11:00 a.m. in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology.
The IUP football team will play West Chester at 1:00 p.m. for its annual Veterans Day game. All current or retired members of the armed forces will be admitted free (up to two free tickets are allowed per military ID) and will be recognized at halftime.
Participating in the coin toss will be Jeremy Feldbusch and Buff Fanella. Feldbusch, originally of Blairsville, is an Army Ranger who was seriously wounded in Iraq. He is now a national spokesman for veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Fanella is the oldest living football player who served in the military, seeing action in World War II as a member of the Marine Corps and participating in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was inducted into the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame in September.
The IUP ROTC will conduct a contracting ceremony at halftime, and military vehicles will be on display in the stadium parking lot.
