The IUP Chorus will perform alongside IUP’s newest piano faculty members, Henry Wong Doe and Anastasia Antonacos, on October 26, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall. The concert, IUP Chorus and Premiere Piano Concert, is part of the Department of Music and Lively Arts’ Sound Choices series.
The performance will include works such as Ralph Vaughn Williams’ “In Windsor Forest” featuring Wong Doe and adapted from the opera Sir John in Love.
Antonacos will be featured in the performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s 1842 chorus from Nabuko titled “Va Pensiero” as well as a piece from Don Carlo, which premiered in 1867.
Collaboratively, four works from the American composer Irving Fine’s 1942 Alice in Wonderland series will be performed. Fine has been commended on his skill of creating pieces that are filled with innocence as well as sophisticated irony.
The performance will also include works from Neue Liebeslieder, Op. 65. This collection of Romantic pieces was written by Johannes Brahms for four soloists and four hands on the piano. The love songs were written between 1869 and 1874 and include fellow faculty musician Mary Logan Hastings, soprano.
Wong Doe, a New Zealand native, received his D.M.A. degree in piano from the Juilliard School and his master’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Auckland.
Wong Doe has performed in major concert halls around the world including Lincoln Center, New York, Mann Auditorium, Tel Aviv, and the Sydney Opera House. Lending his experience and knowledge, Wong Doe now teaches applied piano and introduction to music classes at IUP and maintains an active performance schedule as recitalist, accompanist, and soloist.
Holding a doctorate in piano performance from Indiana University in Bloomington, Antonacos has presented notable performances around the world as a solo recitalist and chamber musician. She has played in locations such as Greece, Russia, France, and Belgium, as well as various places throughout the U.S., including Washington D.C. Antonacos joined the IUP Music faculty in August 2010.
