Artist-in-residence Mike Stadler and English professor Lynn Shelly are collaborating to bring art into the classroom on the IUP at Punxsutawney campus.
Thanks to ArtsPath, an arts-in-education program managed by the College of Fine Arts in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the students in Dr. Shelly’s writing classes are learning to compose visual texts at the same time as they are learning to compose verbal ones. Under Mr. Stadler’s direction, the students will have the opportunity to learn basic woodworking techniques as they construct journal notebooks for English class. The notebook will contain personal writing as well as drawings and collages.
In addition, students will work with Mr. Stadler in creating a larger woodworking project that will remain as a permanent installation on the campus.
Mr. Stadler’s residency will run through December 2010 and culminate in a display of everyone’s work on December 13.
