The IUP student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children will host its annual children's fair from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. October 24, 2010, in the Susquehanna Room of the Hadley Union Building. The fair is free, and children are encouraged to come in costume.
The focus of the fair is to provide a service for younger children, including children with disabilities, through fun activities such as pumpkin painting, “scary” storytelling, a bean bag toss, and mask making, while maintaining a literacy theme.
Many of the game prizes are books, which are intended to highlight the importance of reading to participants. The fair is held on the national Make a Difference Day, created by USA WEEKEND magazine as a day for helping others through various projects.
Approximately twenty to thirty council members are involved in the fair each year. Most are education majors, while many are in the Special Education and Clinical Services Department's Education of Exceptional Persons, Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Disabilities Services, and Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons programs. Students from IUP Sign-In, a sign language performance group, and IUP Best Buddies have also participated.
Jan Baker, Becky Knickelbein, and Joann Migyanka, faculty members in the Department of Special Education and Clinical Services, are co-advisors of the group.
