Departments and Programs

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics houses the following departments and programs:

Biology
From biomolecules to biomes, this is the place to study biology. Our department has the academic size and diversity to offer opportunities found at larger research institutions, yet we are able to maintain the personal and intimate learning community found at smaller liberal arts colleges. In short, we offer the best of both worlds. As you tour our website, you will see that we are committed to excellence in both teaching and scholarship, with the student at the center of our activities. This commitment creates a learning environment where students excel both in and out of the classroom.
Biochemistry
IUP is one of only a few schools offering an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, one of the fastest growing high-tech fields in the United States.
Chemistry
The B.S. in Chemistry is a professional degree and is certified by the American Chemical Society. The student completing this major should be qualified to assume a position in industry or government as a chemist or to apply for admission to graduate school to pursue advanced studies leading to the M.S. or Ph.D. degree.
Computer Science
The programs in Computer Science at IUP prepare graduates for productive work in highly computer-dependent areas.
Geoscience
The IUP Geoscience Department offers degrees in Geology, Environmental Geology, and Earth and Space Science Education.
Mathematics
Students from the Mathematics Department go on to careers in education, business, information technology, industry, and any other field that values the skills of an analytical mind. Join us for the love of mathematics, the universal language that describes the order and pattern of the universe!
Physics
Physics is a growing practical component of engineering and medical science, biology, and chemistry.
Preprofessional Programs
IUP Preprofessional programs prepare students for admission to professional schools – chiropractic, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, and podiatry.
Psychology
In the Psychology Department, students gain an understanding of the methods and findings that characterize psychology as the science of behavior and mental processes.
Science for Disaster Response
The Science for Disaster Response track provides intensive education and training in the principles involved in detecting, identifying, and safe handling of chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) agents and their precursors as they are related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
