Audition and Portfolio Considered
Students who wish to major in composition must audition for the Department of Music on an instrument or for voice. At the time of the audition, they will submit a portfolio of two or three contrasting scores. At least one score should be handwritten. Recordings or MIDI renderings are recommended, but not required.
Applicants who audition successfully and whose portfolio demonstrates sufficient technical development will be admitted directly into the composition program. Those who audition successfully but require introductory study in composition will be admitted to the BA in Music program and reassessed after their first or second year.
Students who have already matriculated in a music program at IUP and wish to switch to the composition major are not required to re-audition, but must submit a portfolio according to the guidelines above.
As a music student, you'll not only be a part of our Music Department "family" but also a member of a close-knit unit based on your musical specialization. We refer to those as areas. Get to know the Theory and Composition Area to learn more about the opportunities enjoyed by our students.
