Music Education Intensive Summer Session

Jump-start your master’s degree, earn continuing education hours, or recharge your teaching batteries at IUP’s summer intensive session! Held on the IUP campus, you can earn up to five hours of graduate credit in just 10 days of coursework.

Courses have included Advanced Instrumental Conducting with Dr. Jason Worzbyt (2 credits) and Foundations of Music Education with Dr. Laura Ferguson (3 credits).

Students can continue on to complete the MA in Music Education with our fully online courses in the Fall and Spring semesters, with a manageable five credits per term (30 credits total).

Dr. Jason Worzbyt

Dr. Jason Worzbyt

Dr. Worzbyt is a professor of bassoon and conductor of the Concert Band at IUP. He holds a BS in music education from IUP, and a Master of Music in wind conducting and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in bassoon performance from the University of North Texas.

His conducting teachers include Jack Stamp, director of Band Studies at IUP, and Eugene Corporon, director of Wind Studies at the University of North Texas. He has studied bassoon with Kathleen Reynolds, principal bassoonist of the Dallas Opera Orchestra; Kristen Wolfe Jensen, professor of bassoon at the University of North Texas; and David Borst, professor of bassoon at IUP.


Dr. Laura Ferguson

Dr. Laura Ferguson

Dr. Ferguson is an associate professor of music education and earned the MME and EdD from the University of Illinois. She is a specialist in general music with particular research interests in children’s expressive movements to music, the use of vernacular music in classrooms, and practical applications of technology use.

Before coming to IUP, she taught elementary general music, beginning strings, elementary and middle school band, and high school choral ensembles in Illinois. Dr. Ferguson’s innovative use of technology in the classroom was recognized by a faculty teaching award during her first year at IUP and continues to be a vital aspect of her teaching. She is a frequent clinician for the International Association of Jazz Educators, where she presents at international conferences, as well as serving as a faculty member of IAJE’s Teacher Training Institute.
