Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction

The D.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction is a weekend program that prepares teacher educators for college and university settings. It is designed for those who are beginning or continuing careers in higher education and for those who would like to become curriculum experts and professional development specialists in public, private, and independent schools.

Program features include:

  • Saturday-only classes during the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Summer classes meeting for only five weekends (all day Friday and Saturday)
  • Coursework completion in three years by taking classes part time
  • Option to earn the Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction Certificate from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

  • Technology in the Curriculum

  • Doctoral Seminar in Curriculum and Instruction
  • Electives (6 credits)

II. Professional Skills (12 credits)

  • Writing for Professional Publication
  • Doctoral Seminar in Research Methods
  • Doctoral Seminar in Applied Educational Research

or

  • Research Instrument Design
  • Qualitative Research Methods in Education

III. Internship (6 credits)

  • Supervised Doctoral Internship

IV. Dissertation (9 credits)

  • Dissertation

V. Professional Portfolio
The professional portfolio will be developed during the course of the doctoral program. See the Doctoral Program in Curriculum and Instruction Handbook for detailed guidelines.

Format

Take courses with a cohort, through which you will build and maintain a supportive professional and academic network by moving through your sequence of classes with the same group of students. The next Monroeville cohort is scheduled to begin with the Fall 2013 term.

Applying

Submit the following to IUP’s School of Graduate Studies and Research for admission consideration:

  • Application form: Apply online or request materials by e-mailing graduate-admissions@iup.edu or by calling 800-845-0131.
  • Two letters of recommendation. One must be academic, from a professor qualified to assess your suitability as a doctoral student.
  • Signed and dated statement of career and academic goals
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • $50 nonrefundable application fee.

The following application items must be submitted to the Department of Professional Studies in Education:

  • Recorded, five-minute research-based presentation
  • All applicants must provide a one-and-a-half-hour online writing sample. Applicants will be contacted about the writing sample via e-mail, once their applications are complete and sent to the Department of Professional Studies in Education for review.
