About Information Systems and Decision Sciences

Mission Statement

The mission of the Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is to prepare students who will assist and lead in the application of current and emerging Information Technology (IT), to create strategic and competitive advantage, and to create operational efficiency and effectiveness. The department will also provide the community and the commonwealth with knowledge and access to education consistent with the demands of the marketplace. The Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department will do this through qualified faculty members who excel in both teaching and scholarship and remain invested in continuous skill and knowledge enhancement in this rapidly changing field. The department will provide a balanced curriculum rich in both business and technical concepts/skills. State-of-the-art technology will be available for experimentation and learning, and collaboration with organizations will be available to gain real world experience and apply the learning to a real life situation. These will converge to provide students with hybrid technical and business leadership skills for a variety of organizations.

Program Objectives

  • To create a learning process wherein students integrate technical skills and business knowledge for the acquisition, deployment, and management of Information Technology (IT) resources (including personnel) and services.
  • To create a learning process wherein students integrate technical skills and business knowledge towards development and evolution of technology infrastructures and systems for use in organizational processes.
  • To build up skills and attitudes that promote a lifelong continuous pursuit for knowledge of emerging Information Systems approaches and technologies and their application to create value for the organization.
  • To develop critical thinking skills, and develop the ability to model a problem and apply a variety of general problem-finding/solving strategies and techniques.
  • To develop abilities to analyze and interpret both qualitative and quantitative data using various techniques and methodologies, and to draw meaningful inferences for decision-making within deterministic margins of error.
  • To develop strong communication and team/group skills whereby students can evaluate and synthesize information while incorporating the values of integrity, creativity, curiosity, and excellence.
  • To develop abilities to work efficiently and effectively in diverse teams both as a member and a leader.
  • To expose students to issues of social responsibility and ethics in both a national and international context which are intensified in a culturally diverse and fast-changing technical environment.
  • To produce well-rounded citizens by incorporating a multidisciplinary liberal studies education in humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
