Dr. Robert J. Ackerman, a noted author, lecturer, and researcher in the field of alcohol and the family, is the founding director, and Dr. Edward Gondolf, a nationally recognized researcher in the domestic violence field and treatment evaluation, is the director of research. The staff includes a project coordinator, secretary, research assistants, graduate assistants, database manager, data entry staff, and student assistants.
Gateway Rehabilitation Center is a non-profit network of community-based treatment centers providing personalized addiction treatment to adults and youth. Forbes magazine has listed Gateway as one of the "ten best" rehabilitation centers in the country. Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is a state campus of nearly 15,000 approximately 50 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, PA.
MARTI also awards two graduate assistantships through Indiana University of Pennsylvania annually. One is the Domestic Violence Study Assistantship and the other is the MARTI Assistantship.
MARTI has been notably successful in its training mission. Since 1988, MARTI has convened four professional training conferences a year in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on such topics as women and addiction, anti-social personality and treatment, adult children of alcoholics, and self-defeating behaviors. It convenes an annual five-day summer school at IUP featuring nationally recognized lecturers in the alcohol treatment, high-risk children, and domestic violence fields. The 1993 MARTI Summer School was held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics with over 500 in attendance.
