BE READY FOR NURSING EXAMS — “IUP does a really great job of preparing you. They have a 96 percent pass rate on that (referencing the 2010 NCLEX RN exam)—on the first try,” said Megan Spangler, nursing major.

Prepare for a Rewarding Career as a Nurse

In the BS in Nursing program at IUP, you’ll prepare for a career as a registered nurse. RNs are patient advocates concerned with promoting health and wellness, preventing disease, and helping both patients and their families cope with health care concerns. Our curriculum prepares you to meet the challenges of this rewarding profession.

Accredited Program

The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Prep First Year, Start Nursing Classes and Clinicals Sophomore Year

You’ll spend your first year taking required science and liberal studies courses. Nursing courses and clinicals begin in the first semester of your sophomore year. Clinical sites utilized in the program include a variety of agencies within approximately a 60-mile radius of Indiana, Pennsylvania, including Greensburg, Latrobe, DuBois, and occasionally the Pittsburgh area. Throughout the last six semesters, clinical experiences in patient care are provided in acute and long-term care facilities as well as community settings.

Program Focuses on Core Competencies

The program outcomes include the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) core competencies of baccalaureate nursing education: assessment, communication, critical thinking, and technical skills. Professional role development is added as a fifth outcome.

By obtaining a baccalaureate degree in Nursing at IUP, you will have the credentials necessary to pursue further education in advance practice nursing. Advance practice roles include clinical nurse specialist (CNS), nurse practitioner (NP), certified registered anesthetist (CRNA), and certified nurse midwife (CNM).
