B.S.Ed., English Education

College of Humanities and Social Sciences

What You’ll Do

English Education is a challenging and rewarding major that prepares you to teach English at the secondary level. You'll take liberal studies and major-required courses, as well as professional education courses that foster the development of content and pedagogical knowledge. You'll also learn about teaching special-needs students and English-language learners, so you can effectively meet the diverse needs of the students in your classrooms.

Field experiences are integral to this major. Early in the program, you'll visit secondary classrooms, observing teaching and learning as a pre-service teacher, increasing your awareness and understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of English teachers.

Your course of study culminates in student teaching. Over the course of 15 weeks as a student teacher in the classroom, you'll hone your teaching skills while beginning to experience the gratifying challenges of teaching English.

What You’ll Become

The B.S.Ed. degree in English Education will certify you to teach secondary English in Pennsylvania and at least 45 other states. The IUP English Education Program has a reputation for producing excellent teachers; our graduates are often recruited by school districts throughout Pennsylvania and neighboring states.

As a secondary English teacher, you'll help your students to understand and appreciate literature and writing and to communicate effectively. You'll empower them and enrich their lives in and out of the classroom.
