Special Notice
The Pennsylvania Department of Education is changing the structure of teacher certification. IUP is responding by also revising how we offer certain majors that lead to teaching certification. Please note that what you read below may not in its entirety reflect the experience you might receive in this program.
What You'll Do
Watching a six-year-old read his first book or seeing the pride of a fifth-grader who earned a star at the top of her math test are just some of the rewards of teaching. As an elementary education major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll take a range of courses that will help you grow into a highly effective educator.
At IUP, your professors will teach you how to lead a classroom and will offer you time-tested as well as innovative strategies for engaging young learners. Indiana University of Pennsylvania has earned a reputation for outstanding teacher education.
Among the many the topics you’ll cover in your IUP classes are school law, educational psychology, the education of students with disabilities, teaching math, teaching art, reading for the elementary school, and pedagogy. You’ll also gain valuable experience by taking part in IUP’s extensive student teaching program.
