What You’ll Do

Scientific minds excel in filtering information and finding relationships. As a Biology Education major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll find that teaching and science are brought together at IUP in a way unsurpassed by other schools.

IUP’s Biology Department has the academic size and diversity to give you the opportunities found at larger research institutions while also providing you with the personal and intimate learning community found at smaller liberal arts colleges.

From biomolecules to biomes, IUP is the place to study biology. You will grow in your knowledge of science, and you will discover how best to share that knowledge with your students. Indiana University of Pennsylvania has earned a reputation for excellence in teacher education and offers an outstanding student teaching program.

What You’ll Become

The Bachelor of Science in Education with a Biology certification will prepare you for a career as a teacher. Employment of teachers is expected to grow by 12 percent between 2006 and 2016, although some areas of the country are expected to do better than others. This is expected to create 479,000 additional teacher positions, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Science is projected to be one of the high-demand fields for teachers.

In the cycle of your life, you may want to explore other careers outside teaching. Many who complete this degree continue their education at the graduate level or work in government or industry.  Some career options for graduates with biology expertise are health department official, drinking water plant operator, environmental protection official, laboratory director, laboratory technician, environmental consultant, industrial hygienist, safety supervisor, and food safety specialist.
