Major Match

Unsure?  Confused?  Undecided?! Follow this link to Find Your Match.

Many students have difficulty deciding on a major.  You are definitely not alone.  Your major, your focus of study for the next four years, your career track.  It seems so overwhelming and unbelievably important.  The question of your major usually brings with it all of those big questions of life:

  • What do I want to do with my life?
  • What decisions do I have to make right now?
  • What are my short-term goals?
  • What are my long-term goals?
  • Who can help me sort through all my options?!

Major Match is here for you.  This is a database of all the majors that are available at IUP.  Simply select your interests from the list and Major Match will link them to the majors that are most closely related to your interests. Follow this link to begin your quest.  A large part in choosing a path of study is educating yourself of the many options available to you.  Follow this link to some suggestions and information you may need before choosing a major.

Don't panic.  It's O.K. to be struggling with the process of choosing a major.  It might even be an advantage.  People who decide too quickly, without considering all their options, sometimes quit exploring too early and miss out on the best.  With a four-year college plan, you have time to learn, think, change your mind, prepare, and plan.  Take a moment to look over a few common myths related to the search for a major.

  • Accept that you're undecided and realize that you are not the only one.
  • Begin exploring career options by talking to people in fields you are interested in.
  • Continue exploring career options at IUP by enrolling in Career Exploration course, seeing a career counselor, or using the resources at the Career Exploration Center.
  • Dedicate yourself to choosing a major and don't give up until you've explored all your options.

The most important thing to remember about decision making and about what to look for in reviewing decisions is the inescapable nature of change. Everything changes. Our own beliefs, attitudes, and values will change. Our environment is changing with ever-increasing rapidity. In 25 or even 5 years, many of our goals and skills will be obsolete… Our world must grow and change with us.
