Appearances by Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl XL Champions James Farrior and Ike Taylor will be the highlight on Saturday, June 17, at the Harrisburg Area IUP Alumni Chapter’s sports card show.
Former New York Yankees pitcher Art Ditmar and Pirates luminary Bill Virdon will also be among the celebrities signing autographs.
The show is at the Harrisburg Mall, located off the I-83 and Paxton Street Exit. According to Carl Hisiro ’76, the show’s promoter, readers have the chance to order advance autograph tickets for use at the show or to purchase autographs by mail on eight-by-ten-inch color photos.
Farrior is the Steelers’ starting middle linebacker. In 2004, he was voted the team’s MVP and was an All-Pro selection. Farrior also started for the American Football Conference in the 2005 Pro Bowl. He will sign autographs at the show for $35 each on eight-by-ten inch color photos, cards, or other nonpremium items. Autographs on mini-helmets, 16x20s, and footballs will be $50 each and on game jerseys and full size helmets they will be $60 each.
Ike Taylor is kick return specialist and first year starter at cornerback for the Steelers. In Super Bowl XL, he had a key fourth quarter interception that helped preserve the team’s victory. Taylor will sign autographs at the show for $25 each on eight-by-ten color photos, cards, or other nonpremium items; $40 on mini-helmets, 16x20s, and footballs; and $50 on jerseys and full size helmets.
New York Yankees’ great Art Ditmar was a top pitcher for some of the great New York Yankees teams in the late 1950s and played on three World Series teams, including the 1958 World Series Champions and the 1960 team that lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh Pirates’ Great Bill Virdon was a member of that Pirates World Series Championship team and was the National League’s Rookie of the Year in 1955, when he broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals. He later managed with both the Yankees and the Pirates and continues to work in the Pirates organization today. Ditmar’s and Virdon’s autographs on photos, cards, and baseballs will be $12 each, while their autographs on bats and game jerseys will be $20 each.
Ditmar will sign autographs from 10:00 a.m. to noon, Virdon from noon to 2:00 p.m., Farrior from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and Taylor from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The June show will feature seventy dealer tables selling vintage and new sports cards, sports memorabilia and collectibles, and nonsports cards. Proceeds from the three-day show, scheduled for June 16-18, and from the autograph signings will be donated by the chapter to the Foundation for IUP for the chapter’s scholarship endowment fund that benefits IUP students from the Harrisburg/York/Lancaster area. The chapter has donated $59,000 from previous card shows to the Foundation, including approximately $36,000 to the scholarship endowment fund. The chapter raised $8,500 from last year’s two shows.
Mail order prices (which include return postage and handling) are $42.50, $32.50, $19.50, and $19.50 for Farrior, Taylor, Ditmar, and Virdon, respectively, for an eight-by-ten-inch color photo supplied by the chapter. Information about other mail-order items may be obtained by calling Hisiro for pricing and mailing instructions. Those planning to attend the show to obtain autographs may order tickets in advance by sending a check made payable to Carl Hisiro and sent to him prior to the show at 108 Nicolas Court, Harrisburg, PA 17110. For advance ticket sales only, a self-addressed stamped envelope should be included with the order.
