Mike Konold and family

With less than six months until his graduation from the University of Maryland as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Mike Konold ’95 suffered a spinal cord injury.

From Allegheny General Trauma Hospital, where surgeons relieved pressure on his spinal cord and fused three of his vertebrae, Mike was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he became a patient at the same trauma unit where he had been a nurse for six years.

After extensive evaluation, Mike was transferred to the Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital in Baltimore, where he will remain for an indefinite period of time until he is able to go home to his family (his wife, Denise Delcoco Konold ’93, and their four children: Bailey, 11; Logan, 9; Alaina, 6; and Alyssa, 5).

Mike has very limited movement in his upper and lower extremities. He is not able to feed himself, nor walk, nor sit up by himself. His progression at this time is questionable, and he is currently in a lot of pain, which is being managed by pain medication.

His brother, Steve (’91), sent this information to Alumni Extra along with word that a benefit fund has been set up through PNC Bank to help support Mike and his family during this difficult time.

“I am asking that you would consider helping Mike’s family financially and aid in his recovery by helping to lessen the financial burden that this tragedy has created,” Steve writes. “Those of you who know Mike know that he is the most compassionate, caring, and giving person you will ever have the privilege of meeting. Mike always has a good attitude and has so much to offer. He is a perfect fit for the medical field in which he is striving to excel and which is even more evident by the outpouring of support he has received from those who knew Mike professionally....

“We are asking that you please help his family during his recovery by giving a donation to lessen the financial burden which will aid in his recovery. No donation is too small. Let’s help Mike so that he can help others!”
