IUP alumnus Jason Capizzi
Members of the university community attended the Steelers Pre-practice Picnic on August 2, 2009, sponsored by the IUP Alumni Association.
Along with food and drink, the picnic included a raffle for Steelers memorabilia and VIP viewing access for practice. After the picnic, everyone traveled to the “Hill” to watch the Steelers take the field.
Patti Klausing Simmons ’72 was one of many taking pictures, including that of alumnus and former IUP football player Jason Capizzi (at right). His parents said that while Jason started his collegiate football career at Pitt, the best thing that ever happened to him was when he transferred to IUP.
Patti noted that alumni and guests enjoyed a great lunch at on the St. Vincent’s campus, with most everyone dressed in Steeler black and gold. Door prizes included IUP shirts, Steeler Training Camp ball caps, Steeler football jerseys, and VIP on-field passes. Chances were sold for three tickets to the Steeler preseason Super Bowl rematch with the Arizona Cardinals.
John Simpson ’79, the Steeler marketing representative, talked to the group about Steeler camp and showed off his Super Bowl ring—and let people try it on!
All six Super Bowl trophies were on display (with a guard standing watch!), as Mr. Rooney requested that they be at camp for the first week or so.
“Even with the rain, the whole experience of being at Steeler camp very organized, from parking to getting to the field to the store set up with Steeler stuff',” said Patti.
