At the 2009 National Drowning Prevention Alliance symposium in Miami, it was noted that four of the NDPA board members graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Pictured are, from left, Kim Tyson ’80, Tomas LeClerc M’97, Mary Ann Downing ’82, and Bob Ogoreuc ’89.
These four NDPA members have made a difference in the world of aquatics and as drowning prevention advocates. IUP was well known for its aquatic program and world class “aquatic schools” led by Dr. Ralph Johnson.
Downing pointed out that May is Drowning Prevention and Water Safety Month. “This is a good time to remind IUP that drowning prevention is everybody’s business!”
Tyson is a founding NDPA board member, president-elect for 2008-09 and 2007-08, and aquatic coordinator for the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas–Austin.
LeClerc is Aquatics Division manager for the City of Albuquerque.
Downing is the owner of Pool Safety Solutions, Inc., San Diego, Calif., and a Katchakid sales executive.
Ogoreuc is NDPA Education Committee chair and an assistant professor at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
