Photo of Alana Smith by Amanda Lucidon ’01
Amanda Lucidon ’01 is the recipient of the International Award of Excellence, Feature Story, Multi-Media, in the sixty-sixth annual Pictures of the Year International Competition.
Her presentation told the story of Alana Smith, a California School for the Deaf ballerina who excels, yet cannot hear a word of instruction from her instructor. The story with the multimedia presentation was by staff writer Julia Glick.
Pictures of the Year International conducts the international competition as a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism. More than 46,000 images from entrants were reviewed during the three weeks of judging. Since its founding in 1944, POYi has become the oldest and one of the world’s largest and most highly respected photojournalism competitions. For six decades, newspaper and magazine photographers have sent their strongest images to be judged in an annual contest started by the late Cliff Edom, the University of Missouri professor who coined the term “photojournalism.”
