Literacy Center

The Literacy Center provides assessment and instruction for children and adolescents who need assistance with reading and writing.

Services include testing, individual tutoring, and group reading/writing programs.

Graduate students pursuing master’s degrees in Literacy with Reading Specialist Certification and some undergraduate students provide the services. Reading and literacy faculty in the Department of Professional Studies in Education supervise the center.

Services are offered during Summer Session II, approximately July 6 through August 6, with daily activities. A small fee is charged for services.

The Literacy Center also sponsors professional development for schools, workshops for parents and families, training for graduate students, and research projects, and has literacy resources available and offers consulting for agencies.

MEd in Literacy and Reading Specialist Program

Announcement about Accreditation

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s College of Education and Educational Technology is pleased to announce that the MEd in Literacy and Reading Specialist Program has earned national recognition by the International Literacy Association, formerly known as the International Reading Association (IRA). This program is offered to educators certified in teaching who are pursuing graduate studies in reading and literacy theories, research, and instructional practices. This accreditation recognizes exemplary practices in which candidates demonstrate attainment of the IRA standards for literacy professionals.

The program infuses levels of coaching throughout the coursework, and this initiative has been deemed a model for all institutions according to the IRA. All full-time faculty members have doctoral degrees in the discipline and represent diverse cultural groups. Faculty members with reading specialist certification and many years of teaching experience supervise Practicum activities with children and adolescents.
