This articles discusses the basic steps involved in taking a Moodle on-line quiz.

  1. Login to the Moodle course and select the desired quiz link from the course home page.
  2. On the quiz introduction screen, underneath the quiz title, you will see any instructions your instructor has included with the quiz. You will see the time limit as well as the quiz open and close dates if your instructor has set these. Lastly, you will see the Attempt Quiz Now button (as shown by the red arrow) that you click to begin your quiz. After selecting the Attempt Quiz Now button, you will see a dialog box that will remind you if the quiz has a time limit and how many attempts you are permitted. To proceed, select the OK button.

  3. Your quiz will then begin. If your instructor has selected the quiz security feature, your quiz will open in a new window.

  4. The quiz questions are displayed on one or more pages. At the top and bottom of the page you will see page numbers and a Next link used to advance through the questions (as shown by the green arrow). In the upper left corner you will see a timer, if your instructor has set a time limit on taking the quiz (as shown by the blue arrow). The timer will move down the page if multiple questions are displayed on a single page.

At the bottom of every quiz page you will see two buttons: "Save without submitting" and "Submit all and finish." It is a good practice to select the "Save without submitting" button after each question in order to save your answers before submitting the quiz (as shown by the red arrow). When you have completed the quiz, select the "Submit all and finish" button.

Before submitting your quiz, you are warned that once you close the attempt you will not be able to change your answers. Select the OK button to continue.
  5. The next screen will provide feedback. The feedback displayed depends on how your instructor has configured the quiz.

In this example, in the left corner you will see your start and finish time along with how long it took you to take the quiz; the number correct out of the total, known as Marks; and the grade out of the total. Questions are displayed as set by the instructor. This example shows them displayed one at a time with page numbers and a Next link to move among the questions. There is also a link titled "Show all questions on one page" (as shown by the red arrow) to show all the questions on a single page. When you are done viewing your results, select the Finish review button.

  6. You will be taken back to the quiz summary page. In the summary section you will see the number of attempts, date the quiz was completed, the marks, and grade. Just underneath the attempt, marks, and grade (as shown by the red arrows), the numbers are links that will take you back to the detailed quiz review. Depending on the settings your instructor has set for the quiz results, your result screen may look different. Selecting the Continue button will return you to the course homepage.
