The following list provides answers to the most common questions asked by instructors regarding General Moodle topics.

How do I sign up for a Moodle workshop? What workshops will be given?

You will find the schedule for all Moodle workshops on the IT Support Center website.

You can sign up for a Moodle workshop at the IT Support Center Workshop and Training Request Form website.

Why did Moodle log me out?

Moodle has an idle timeout of 60 minutes. It will automatically logout a person who has been inactive for 60 minutes. The inactivity is determined by the server. The server does not recognize selecting radio buttons or typing in its HTML editor as activity. The server will recognize selecting the “Save” and "Update" buttons at the bottom of a pages as well as moving among courses.

Particularly in the case of students taking quizzes, we recommend that students select the "Save without submitting" button after answering each question or a series of questions so the server is aware of activity for that quiz. To help you understand that you are about to be timed out, a series of warning messages will be displayed.

When you have been inactive for 50 minutes,the message below will be displayed. You will need to click on the OK button and either:

  • Click the Save Without Submitting Button if you are are taking a quiz.
  • Click the Save or Update button on a page or navigate to another page inside Moodle.

When you have been inactive for 60 minutes,the message below is displayed. You will need to click the OK button and either:

  • Open a new browser tab/window and log back in before proceeding.
  • Copy and paste any unsaved work into another application (such as Notepad) before proceeding.

I cannot bookmark the Moodle login page.

The best way to bookmark or add the Moodle login page as a favorite is to login to Moodle first using your preferred browser (for example Firefox or Internet Explorer) and your IUP computer account username and password.

After that, go to the tool in your browser and set the page as a bookmark or favorite as you would any other page. The next time you use this bookmark or favorite, it will take you to the Moodle login page.

When trying to login to Moodle, I get a "Page Not Found: HTTP Error 404"

This will occur if you try and login directly into webso.iup.edu without first going to https://moodle.iup.edu. Please make sure to always type https://moodle.iup.edu or setup a bookmark to it following the steps outlined in the “I cannot bookmark the Moodle Login Page FAQ.”

In Internet Explorer 7, 8, and 9 I get the following message while taking a quiz: "Do you want to allow this webpage to access your Clipboard?"

The following steps will fix this issue:

  1. From the “Tools” menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. In the “Security level for this zone” area, click Custom level....
  4. Scroll down to the “Scripting” section, under “Allow Programmatic clipboard access,” click Enable.

I cannot see the student's e-mail address in the detailed view of participants in my Moodle course.

A student's e-mail address will only appear in the detailed view of the participant's screen once they have logged into Moodle for the first time.

What are the Moodle course categories?

Can I use WebDAV with Moodle?

WebDAV for Moodle is not available at this time.

When I click on a Wimba Classroom link, the room does not launch. There is also a message in the lower left hand corner of the browser window that states “Error on page.”

By default, Internet Explorer 8 does not allow allow mixed mode content to be displayed in the same window. Please follow these steps in order to fix the problem:

  1. From the “Tools” menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. In the “Security level for this zone” area, click Custom level....
  4. Scroll down to the “Miscellaneous” section, under “Display mixed content,” click Enable.

When using the Algorithmic Question Type from Respondus in a Moodle Quiz, students are not able to type in the answer box?

This will occur on a MAC OS computer when the quiz is set for Full screen pop-up with some Javascript security.  To remedy the issue either the student must take the quiz on a PC or set the Quiz Browser security setting to none.
