Presenters’ Biography
Dr. Karen Rose Cercone has taught large introductory geoscience classes at IUP since 1986, when she joined the Geoscience Department after teaching at SUNY Stony Brook. She has also taught distance education sections of the same class since 1999 and continues to experiment with different technology and pedagogy to increase student engagement and encourage critical thinking in both class formats. Her current work with Moodle combines elements of on-line classes with in-class group work to capture the attention of a generation of students who prefer Web-surfing and text messages to traditional pen-and-paper class participation.
Dr. Dennis Giever is a professor in the Department of Criminology. He taught for a number of years at New Mexico State University (NMSU) before joining the IUP faculty in 1998. Dennis has been involved in several initiatives in distance education helping to develop some very early on-line courses at NMSU in collaboration with other universities and a National Lab. At IUP, he has taught on-line courses using both WebCT and Moodle. He has just recently created an on-line version of a master’s level course in statistics utilizing Moodle. In developing this new course, Dennis utilized many different technologies in an attempt to ensure that the on-line version of this course was of the same caliber as the on-campus version.
