The following are answers to the most frequently asked question about Moodle.

What is Moodle?

Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle) is an open source Learning Management System that offers collaborative learning tools, activity-based learning, and interaction with materials that encourage critical reflection. Moodle offers standard features including gradebook, on-line quizzes, forums, and assignments.

I cannot see my course in Moodle.

A Moodle course is made available to students by the instructor. Please contact your instructor to see if he or she has opened the course.

I cannot bookmark the Moodle login page.

The best way to bookmark or add the Moodle login page as a favorite is to log in to Moodle first using your preferred browser (for example Firefox or Internet Explorer) and your IUP computer account username and password.

After that, go to the tool in your browser and set the page as a bookmark or favorite as you would any other page. The next time you use this bookmark or favorite, it will take you to the Moodle login page.

Why did Moodle log me out while I was entering information into the edit box of an assignment or forum, and I lost all the information I was typing?

Moodle will automatically log out a person who has been inactive for 60 minutes. The inactivity is determined by the server. We have found that when entering information into any edit box in Moodle, the server does not recognize that as activity and will log you out after an hour.

The server will recognize selecting the "Save changes" button in an assignment or the "Post to forum" button in a forum. We recommend that students select the appropriate button periodically when typing in an edit box of an assignment or forum to have the server recognize their activity. Students can then go back and continue entering information. Students can also write up their work in a word processor first then copy and paste the information into an assignment or forum edit box.

Taking a quiz in Moodle can have similar results, please see the FAQ question titled, "Why did Moodle log me out during a quiz and I lost all my answers?"

When trying to log in to Moodle, I get a "Page Not Found: HTTP Error 404"

This will occur if you try and log in directly into webso.iup.edu without first going to the Moodle website. Please make sure to always type “https://moodle.iup.edu” or set up a bookmark to it following the steps outlined in the “I cannot bookmark the Moodle Login Page FAQ.”

In Internet Explorer 7/8, I get the following message while taking a quiz: "Do you want to allow this webpage to access your clipboard?"

The following steps will fix this issue:

  1. From the “Tools” menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. In the “Security level for this zone” area, click Custom level...
  4. Scroll down to the “Scripting” section, under “Allow Programmatic clipboard access,” click Enable.

Why did Moodle log me out during a quiz and I lost all my answers?

Moodle has an idle timeout of 60 minutes . Moodle will automatically log out a person who has been inactive for 60 minutes. The inactivity is determined by the server. We have found that, when taking a quiz, the server does not recognize selecting radio buttons beside answers or typing in an editor in a fill-in-the-blank or essay quiz as activity.

The server will recognize selecting the “Save without submitting” button at the bottom of a page in the quiz. We recommend that students select this button after answering each question or a series of questions so the server is aware of activity for that quiz. To help you understand that you are about to be timed out, a series of warning messages will be displayed.

When you have been inactive for 50 minutes, the message below will be displayed. You will need to click on the OK button and either:

  • Click the Save Without Submitting Button if you are are taking a quiz
  • Click the Save or Update button on a page or navigate to another page inside Moodle

When you have been inactive for 60 minutes, the message below is displayed. You will need to click the OK button and either:

  • Open a new browser tab/window and log back in before proceeding
  • Copy and paste any unsaved work into another application (such as Notepad) before proceeding

Contact your professor to discuss retaking the quiz.

I cannot find a reply button in a Moodle forum. What should I do?

Please contact your instructor and let him or her know the situation.

Why does my quiz timer start with less time than specified in the quiz instructions?

When taking a timed quiz, you will have the amount of time specified in the time limit or until the time stated in the quiz close time is reached.

Example:

Time limit: 30 minutes

Quiz Closes: May 7, 2010 09:00 PM

You start the quiz on May 7, 2010 at 08:45 PM. You will only have 15 minutes to take the quiz.
