IUP offers a Moodle course template that can be restored to a course shell to help the instructor get started designing their course in Moodle. The instructions on how to restore the template to a Moodle course shell are as follows:
- Login to Moodle and select the "Moodle Courses" link found in the upper right-hand corner of the Moodle welcome page.
- Select the "IT Services Workshops and Training" link on the Course categories screen. Next, select the link titled "Download Course Templates."
- Click on "Download Course Templates" link, as shown by the red arrow.

- Click on the name of the template file. An example is shown by the red arrow below.

- You will see a File Download box. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to the area on your local computer or a network drive (e.g., H drive) where you want to store the file. Select the Save button to save the file to the desired location.
- In Moodle, navigate to the course you wish to restore the content to and select "Restore" from the Administration block. You are taken to the backupdata folder where Moodle backup files are stored for each course. If this is a blank course shell, you will see no files in the list.
To upload the backup file, select the "Upload a file" button. Browse to the location on your local computer or network drive where you stored the backup file and select the "Upload this file" button. Please note the maximum file size that can be uploaded to Moodle is 20MB.
Next, select the "Restore" link under Action column on the right side of the window in line with the backup filename, as shown in the example by the red arrow below.

- You will then be asked if you want to continue with the restore process. Select the "Yes" button.

- Next, you will see a detailed list of the files to be restored. Review the list, and then scroll to the bottom of the page and select the "Continue" button.
- On the next screen, there are options of how to import files into the course. At the top of the screen next to the label titled “Restore to,” you will need to select "Existing course, deleting it first" from the drop-down menu. This will delete anything in the course that might be there before restoring the desired content.
- You will then be asked to start the actual restore process. Select the "Restore this course now" button.

Review the list presented to make sure all files have been restored. You should see that the process has completed successfully at the bottom of the screen. Next, select the "Continue" button.
You will be returned to the course home page, where you can review the content for accuracy.
