When saving a file, it is important to remember that the person opening your file may or may not use the same type of software that you do.  To ensure the file you save is viewable by others, it is recommended that you save your file using one of the following OPEN file formats:

  • Text Documents: Portable Document Format (PDF); Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)
  • Images: Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG); Portable Network Graphics (PNG); Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)
  • Slide Presentations: Portable Document Format (PDF)
  • Spreadsheets: Comma Separated Variable (CSV)
  • Audio: mp3

In the event that you are unable to save your file in one of the above formats, the following CLOSED proprietary formats from Microsoft Office 2003 are compatible with most software packages:

  • Text Documents: Word (doc)
  • Slide Presentations: Powerpoint (ppt)
  • Spreadsheets: Excel (xls)

Please note that new Microsoft Office 2007 features and files (docx, xlsx, and pptx file extensions) depend upon native formats and may not be accessible for all users - only those that also have Microsoft Office 2007 or those that have Microsoft 2003 with Microsoft 2007 Viewers.
