Moodle course layouts are called formats. Instructors can choose to change this format. There are several to choose from.

Instructions to change the course format are as follows:

  1. Once in your Moodle course, go to the Administration block and select Settings.

  2. On the Edit course settings screen in the General section, scroll down to find the label Format.

  3. From the drop-down menu next to the Format label, select the desired format type. Once the desired format is chosen, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on the Save Changes button. The table below outlines the formats Moodle offers.

Formats Offered by Moodle

Layout Explanation
Weekly This layout is organized week by week. It provides a clear start and end date.
Topic This layout is organized in topic sections, with each section having activities.
Social This layout is oriented around a main forum. It is used for a more free-form environment.
LAMS (Learning Activity Management System) This layout offers a flash-based environment for creating learning sequences. LAMS is integrated with Moodle to offer a LAMS central course interface.
SCORM (Sharable Content Reference Model) This layout enables the use of the SCORM packages, which are self-contained bundles of content.
Weekly Format, CSS/no tables This layout is the same as the Weekly format but does not use tables. This format offers improved accessibility.
