A meta course is used to combine multiple course sections into one course shell to use for instruction. To begin, please request a meta course using the Meta Course Request Form (username login format: IUPMSD\YourUserName).

After the request is completed, the course will show up on your My Moodle page as well as in the course Category list under the Meta section of the term it was requested for.

  1. Once you are inside the meta course, you will notice an extra link called “Child Courses” in the Administration block menu (as shown by the red arrow).

  2. After selecting “Child Courses” from the Administration block menu, you will see the Child Courses screen.

  3. Next, you will need to add your course sections to the meta course. Enter a search term in the Search field such as SP2010 or Spring 2010 (as shown by the red arrow). Moodle will look at the short and long name. Using the term name will show you the courses that you teach for that term.

Clicking the Search button will show your courses in the list box on the right. Highlight a course to be associated with the meta course, then select the Add button (as shown by the blue arrow). The course assigned to the meta course will appear in the left column. You can associate as many courses as you want to the assigned list.

  4. Once you have added the courses, use the Participant block on the course home page to confirm that all of the students for those course sections have been added to your meta course. The automatic enrollment from URSA will continue to add and drop students to the child courses. As a result, enrollment will be updated in the meta course.

Meta Course Gradebook

Twenty-four hours after you have assigned the course sections to the meta course, when you select “Grades” from the Administration block, you will see all of the students from every course shell associated with the meta course. This can make it very difficult to view the Grader report.

There is a way to display just the students from each course shell. You will notice the label "Separate groups" on the left side of the gradebook just above the student names. By selecting the title of the course shell or section you want, the Grade report will display only those students (as shown by the red arrow).
