You will want to back up your course content in Moodle. This will help you make sure you have a copy of the latest content you have created. The instructions for backing up Moodle course content are as follows:

  1. Once in your Moodle course, navigate to the Administration block and select Backup.
  2. Next you will see a list of all the items in the course, as well as user data that can be backed up. Since this backup process is concerned with course content, you will not need to include the user data. To quickly deselect the user data, simply click on the None button at the top right of the screen (as shown by the red arrow in Figure 1)

  1. Scroll down to the bottom of the Course backup screen. Here you will need to change the dropdown menu next to the Users label from Course to None.

You will also need to change the Yes to No from the menu next to the User Files label. Finally, make sure you select the None button at the bottom of the list of check boxes in the section titled “Backup role assignments for these roles” (as shown by the red arrow in Figure 2). This will uncheck all the boxes in the list of roles. Next, select the Continue button.
  2. The next screen displays the assigned name of the backup zip file and the backup details. Because there is no user data being included in the backup, you will see a message indicating the modules have been set to reflect this. Because we do not want user data to be backed up in this case, this message is not a problem.

Review the list of files to be included in the backup, then select the Continue button.
  3. The process continues by displaying a list of all the resources, activities, and files that have been backed up, and should indicate if the process was successful. Select the Continue button. You will be returned to the backup data folder in the files area, where you should see the backup zip file.

Preparations for Restoring Content to Another Course

In preparation to use this backup file for a course restore, you will need to download the file to a local computer or network drive.

  1. To do this, simply click on the backup file name in the backupdata folder in the Files area of your Moodle course.
  2. You will see a File Download box. Select the Save button.
  3. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to the area on your local computer or a network drive (e.g., H Drive) where you want to store the file. You can rename the file if you choose. Select the Save button to save the file to the desired location.
