Using the Anti-Spam Service

 

The anti-spam service filters all e-mail that is delivered (except messages from @iup.edu accounts) to your account.

The anti-spam service will take appropriate action—flag the message in your Inbox or deliver the message to the JunkMail folder—based on the existence of the JunkMail folder. You must then review the spam messages to make a decision (spam or not spam) and take one of several actions:

  • If a message is flagged as spam and you determine that it is spam, just delete it. Do NOT reply to it.
  • If a message is flagged as spam, but you determine that is it legitimate, this is considered a false-positive. If you wish for all messages from this sender to never be flagged as spam, you can add the sender to your whitelist. There are two ways that you can do this:
    • Reply to the sender -- this will automatically add the sender to your whitelist if the message was sent to your current IUP e-mail address and not to an old e-mail address using @grove.iup.edu.
    • Forward the message AS AN ATTACHMENT to pollustop@iup.edu. This will add the sender's address to your personal whitelist. This will not work for messages sent to your @grove.iup.edu address. Please note that these messages are NOT reviewed by a human being.
  • You may also encounter false negatives -- spam that is not detected as such. There is little that can be done with these messages, although if messages from the same account are consistently delivered into the inbox, there are options to set I-Mail rules.

It is important to note that you must review the flagged messages in your e-mail account, and handle them accordingly so that you do not exceed your e-mail quota. Flagged messages are not automatically deleted.
