If you are bringing a computer to campus, the guidelines below will help you to know hardware specifications it needs to meet. Several vendors also offer discounts to IUP students when purchasing a new computer. Visit Tech Deals for more information.

Recommended New Purchase

  • Processors: i5 Processors
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Hard Drive: 250GB
  • Operating System: Windows 8.1, Mac OS X Mavericks
  • Network Card for Connection to IUP (Dorms): 10/100/1000 Base-T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
  • Wireless: 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless networking
  • CD-ROM/DVD Drive: 16 X +/- RW

Minimum Recommended System

  • Processors: i3 Processors
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Hard Drive: 160GB
  • Operating System: Windows 8.1 or Mac OS X Mavericks
  • Network Card for connection to IUP network (Dorms): 10/100/1000 Base-T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
  • Wireless: 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless networking
  • CD-ROM/DVD Drive: 16 X +/- RW

Printers in the Residence Halls

  • Wireless printers may not be used in the residence halls.

Options to Consider

  • Flash drive
  • CD/DVD writer
  • External or portable hard drive (for backups)
  • Always bring your recovery disks to campus with your computer!

Options for Laptops

  • Locking mechanism
  • Wireless network card that supports 802.11n wireless protocol and WPA2-Enterprise
