Overview

Files are "streamed" by placing them within your streaming media directory (publishing point). After the file has been placed in your streaming media directory, you will need to provide access to the file by creating a link to it. Each file that is streamed will need its own link. You can place links to streaming media content within learning management systems at IUP, IUP webpages, etc. The Streaming Media Services Overview page lists each type of file that can be streamed.

Placing a File in Your Streaming Media Directory

Each streaming media directory has an IUPOnly, OwnerOnly, and a SpecialAccess folder. Place your file in the appropriate folder; descriptions of each folder type are listed below:

  • IUPOnly is viewable only by IUP employees and students who can authenticate to the IUP Network.
  • OwnerOnly is viewable only by the owner of the directory (the owner of the publishing point).
  • SpecialAccess is the same as the OwnerOnly folder except the owner can change the security permissions, enabling access to other IUP users.
  • The area outside of these folders is considered the "root" or "top level" of your streaming media directory. Any content stored in the root of your directory can be viewed by anyone who can access the web (including those outside of IUP).

Creating a Link to a Streaming Media File

In order to access your streaming media content, you will need to create a hyperlink for each file stored within your directory. Listed below are sample hyperlinks for an example file called mypresentation.wmv. Examples are provided for each type of streaming directory and subfolder.

    • File stored in IUPOnly folder:
      mms://avs.iup.edu/emp/username/IUPOnly/mypresentation.wmv
    • File stored in OwnerOnly folder:
      mms://avs.iup.edu/emp/username/OwnerOnly/mypresentation.wmv
    • File stored in SpecialAccess folder:
      mms://avs.iup.edu/emp/username/SpecialAccess/mypresentation.wmv
    • File stored at root level:
      mms://avs.iup.edu/emp/username/mypresentation.wmv
