IUP currently employs a variety of anti-spam measures in response to the continued nuisance caused by spam e-mail. Although these measures help to reduce the amount of spam, it is ultimately acknowledged that they will not entirely eliminate it.

It is important to note that individual users are a major factor in spam. Most of the spam, pop-ups, and spyware come as a result of browsing certain sites, clicking on malicious links from e-mails, providing personal information on websites, and downloading add-ins, software, toolbars, and other “tools.” This is part of the reason that users experience varying degrees of this problem.

Many popular email clients (such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook) include built-in safeguards to protect users from unwanted spam messages.

In October 2009, the university implemented an Anti-Spam Service available to anyone with an IUP e-mail address ( This service will aid in identifying potential spam. If spam appears from a common address, it may also be possible to block it using steps outlined at Block Spam in Imail.
