Configure Outlook Express to Use Authenticated SMTP

With the cases of spoofed (faking sender information) e-mail on the rise, IUP has determined a need for greater security for outgoing e-mail messages on the @IUP.EDU server. Outgoing e-mail messages must be authenticated.  This allows positive identification of the sender of any message sent to our e-mail system with a from: address @iup.edu. Thus, someone may still modify an e-mail client to attempt to “spoof” an alternate identity, but SMTP authentication would guarantee that a given message from an @iup.edu account could always be traced back to a specific individual. The transition to authenticated SMTP will require one-time modifications to e-mail clients such as Outlook Express to establish a setting in the program to use the authentication. The instructions for the modifications are outlined below.

  1. Open Outlook Express. From the "Tools" menu in the menu bar, click on "Accounts".

  2. Click on the "Mail" tab.   An icon for your IUP e-mail account should appear in the "Internet Accounts" dialog box (imap.iup.edu). Click "Properties."

  3. Click on the "Servers" tab. Click on the "Checkbox" next to "My server requires authentication". Then click "Apply", and then "OK" again.
