This page provides an overview of what you’ll need and what you’ll need to understand in order to use the test scoring service.

If you have used the test scoring service prior the Spring 2012 semester, you should also review Test Scoring System Differences to review the list of significant changes.

Items needed

Optical scanning forms

Other items

  • Test Scoring Request Envelope
The test scoring request envelope is a special envelope that is available from Central Stores. It used to identify and package the exam. Previously, it had also been used to provide information about processing the exam. Effective Spring semester 2012, processing information will be collected on a downloadable form called the Test Scoring Request Form. See How to Complete the Test Scoring Request Form, which includes information about the information to be completed on the envelope.
  • Test Scoring Request Form
This form is used to provide information about processing the exam. The form can be downloaded by clicking the form name above. Refer to How to Complete the Test Scoring Request Form for instructions to complete this form.
  • Number 2 Pencils
The scanner is designed to read marks made with a Number 2 pencil. All optical scanning forms should be completed using a Number 2 pencil only.

Exam Administration

It’s best to review the Options for Test Scoring before you administer the exam so that you fully understand what can and cannot be done with the test scoring service. In some instances, you will need to:

  • Take special steps when preparing (phrasing) exam questions.
  • Provide special instructions to the students when they take the exam.
  • Be sure to let your students know that they’ll need a Number 2 pencil to take the exam.

Exam Processing

After the exam has been administered, you can refer to Options for Test Scoring again to determine what needs to be included in the Test Scoring Request Envelope when the exams are brought to the IT Support Center for processing. When the exam is ready to be scored, refer to the drop-off section of Test Scoring Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures.

Exam Notification

When your exam has been completed, you will receive a Test Scoring E-mail Notification. This will include the batch number for the exam, which you’ll need to pick it up at the IT Support Center. The pick-up section of Test Scoring Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures describes other alternatives for picking up your exam. Due to space limitations in the IT Support Center, we ask that you continue to pick up your exams even if you have not requested any printed reports.

Exam Output

The Test Scoring E-mail Notification will also provide a link to the folder containing the reports and results created by the test scoring process. You can also access a copy of the e-mail message in this folder. After an exam has been processed, you may wish to keep a copy of the reports or results for your records. See Backing Up Test Scoring Results for more information.
