  • Is it better to use the JunkMail folder for potential spam, or is it better to have it flagged in the Inbox?

    IUP automatically creates a JunkMail folder to help limit the number of unintentional responses to phishing attempts. It can also enhance the efficiency of e-mail usage by decreasing the amount of spam delivered to your Inbox. Please remember to regularly check your JunkMail folder to ensure there are not messages moved to that folder that may be false positives. If a valid message has been delivered to to the JunkMail folder, you will need to whitelist that e-mail address. Ultimately, it is a personal preference.

    What if I don't want to use the JunkMail folder?

    You can simply delete the JunkMail folder from your list of folders. Spam messages will be flagged and delivered to your Inbox, along with all your normal e-mail messages.

    This JunkMail folder displays in imail. Why doesn’t it show up in my folder list in Thunderbird or Outlook?

    If you use Thunderbird, Outlook, or another e-mail client, you'll need to update your folder list in the client to display the JunkMail folder.

    In Thunderbird:

    • Right-click on your account name and choose Subscribe...
    • Select JunkMail from the list.
    • Click Subscribe.
    • Click OK.

    In Outlook:

    • Right-click on your IMAP account and choose IMAP Folders.
    • Click Query.
    • Select JunkMail from the list.
    • Click Subscribe.
    • Click OK.

    How does the anti-spam service function with the imail rules?

    Imail rules will be processed before the anti-spam service handles the message.

    Why can't I receive emails from a .info domain?

    E-mail messages from selected domains can be blocked at the server level. Typically, these are domains that are known to circumvent traditional blocklists.

    Currently, all domains that end with .info are blocked. 

    Exceptions can be made. If you have a legitimate need to exchange e-mail with a domain that is blocked at the domain level, please log into and enter a ticket. Please indicate the e-mail address and/or domain, and indicate the purpose for exchanging e-mail with this domain.

    What are some commonly associated terms with the Anti-Spam service?


    Junk or unsolicited e-mail sent in bulk, or email that is fraudulent.

    Content Filtering 

    The most commonly used group of methods to filter spam. Content filters act either on the content, the information contained in the mail body, or on the mail headers (like "Subject:") to either classify, accept or reject a message. (Source: Wikipedia)


    A list of e-mail addresses or domains that the user considers acceptable to receive email from and whose messages should not be considered spam


    A list of e-mail addresses or domains whose messages should always be considered spam, unless the e-mail address or domain is on the whitelist.


    The anti-spam service falsely identifies a legitimate message as spam.  This happens most often with messages from mailing lists.  The domain or e-mail address can be added to the whitelist to prevent this.
