SUMMARY:IUP Annual Kwanzaa Celebration:  Kwanzaa 2012
DESCRIPTION:Kwanzaa is an annual African American Holiday Celebration of family, friends, culture, and the community.  IUP 2012 Kwanzaa activities is themed "A Little Bit of History, A Little Bit of Soul" and will include the traditional Kwanzaa Ceremony and performances by IUP Voices of Joy Gospel Choir, IUP Africa Dance Ensemble, guest performers Tobey Foyeh and Orchestra Africa of Nigeria, and guest speaker Dr. Fererai Trent, Oprah's "all-time favorite guest" and founder of Tinagana )Shoma for 'it is achievable'), which builds and repair schools in rural Zimbabwe.  The program will also include the Kwanzaa Dinner and the guest is asked to bring a cover dish to share, which is in keeping with the spirit of Kwanzaa, and to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to a local Food Bank through the Ujamaa Food Drive.  Everyone is invited to attend this events as we close the semester in celebration of friendship, diversity, and fellowship. The program is FREE and opened to all.  To RSVP, please contact the AACC at 724-357-2455.  Remember, to please let us know the  covered dish (requested, not REQUIRED) that you will bring. A great time can be expected by all. SUMMARY:Diversity Counts Program Begins (Runs through 5/2/2013)
DESCRIPTION:Using an ethnic-based approach, Diversity Counts provides students with an opportunity to increase their interactions, involvement, and learning about or with people and programs diverse backgrounds.   At the same time, they can earn points and raffle tickets that will give them a chance to win some nice prizes and / or diversity certificates.  The more points and tickets earn the greater the chance of winning a prize.  The program runs February 1, 2013 through May 2, 2013.  Among the activities is Imagine That Essay Contest entitled "Racial/Ethnic Diversity 2050: Implications and Recommendations" that begins 2/8/2013 and ends 4:00 p.m. on 4/21/20013. DESCRIPTION:Black History Month 2013 is themed 2050:  Rooted in the Past, Moving Forward and this program is presented as a special dedication to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It  concludes a day-long list of events and features an interactive panel presentation of noted scholars, activist and performers that is designed to answer such questions as "Can today's art be an act of resustance to public policy that too often marginalizes youth, particularly those from Black and Brown communities - or is it simply a diversion in an era of individualism and consumer culture? Designed in consultation with Bakari Kitwana, journalist, activist, and political commentator on politics and youth, featured panelists include Ms. Sonia Sanchez, poet-activist; Dr. Haki Madhubuti, publisher,poet, activist; Mr. Adam Mansbach, author; Ms. Chinaka Hodge, poet/playwright (Def Poetry Jam); Popmaster Fabel Pabon, Hip-Hop Pioneer; and Dr. James Peterson, Director of Africana Studies, as moderator.
