Housing the Homeless, Feeding the Hungry

We think we have something very special to offer students—something mission critical for our world.

For many years, Hospitality Management professor Dr. Thomas Van Dyke has been putting theory into practice with his Housing the Homeless and Feeding the Hungry course. As part of the course, students have formed groups and volunteered at various local philanthropic organizations; they did semester-long projects of fundraising and community service; and they learned about those who are less fortunate in Indiana County and the rest of the nation and made presentations about selected societal problems and possible solutions.

“The point of the projects is to give the students hands-on experience working with organizations that attend to the needs of people,” Van Dyke said. “Actually getting out into the community to practice the course content is the best way for the students to bring the concepts together.”

Do you have questions about this special opportunity? Contact Professor Van Dyke at for more information about the course. Or, take a moment to visit the schedule of classes found at URSA to find out when it is being offered.

Hospitality Management majors run the Allenwood, a restaurant that features a daily lunch menu and special dinners. It is located on the lower level of Ackerman Hall.

The hospitality industry values graduates who have applied their theoretical knowledge in a hands-on environment. This highly successful classroom allows students to rotate through positions in both the front and back of the house, ensuring that they receive a controlled educational experience in both management and skill-level assignments.

As a student in this program, you could be planning the whole meal—from first course to atmosphere!

Lunch is served daily from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; dinner requires reservations.
