The Senate-approved guidelines for HNRC 483 call for a three-person thesis committee, including the thesis director. (If you are using your own departmental number, the procedure may be different.) Since you know the expertise of IUP faculty better than your student does, you will probably have to suggest some possible members. Normally, at least one of the readers should be from the same department as you, and both may be. However, the third member can be any member of the IUP faculty, administration, or professional staff, or anyone from outside the university who has the expertise and willingness to read the thesis and participate in the oral defense. If the thesis is interdisciplinary or your department is very small, you can choose another appropriate composition.
