Caleb Finegan earned his doctorate (Ph.D., 1999) from the University of Florida with a concentration in colonial Latin American History.
Dr. Finegan teaches courses in world history, Latin American history, and Latin American Studies. Most of his scholarship has focused on how Catholic priests who lived and worked in the Diocese of La Paz from 1680 to 1730 managed their lives as cultural brokers between the Spanish crown and the predominantly indigenous communities they served. He is also the founder of the Latin American Studies minor and the Alternative Spring Break programs at IUP.
For two years, Dr. Finegan served as faculty director of the Citizenship and Civic Engagement Initiative, and in July 2009 he was appointed by IUP President Tony Atwater to be the founding director of the Center for Civic Engagement and Student Leadership. To recognize the work Dr. Finegan has done with students and student organizations since his arrival at IUP in Fall 2000, Dr. Finegan was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award in the Area of Service in 2007.
