About the name “Pechan Health Center”
From its construction in 1968 until the fall semester of 2008, the Pechan Health Center building at the corner of Pratt and Maple provided health care to Indiana University of Pennsylvania students twenty-four hours a day for many of its nearly forty years. Named in honor of Pennsylvania State Senator Albert R. Pechan, a Ford City dentist prior to entering public service, the building housed health services as well as health education and advocacy services for many years. It was staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and administrative staff who carried out a mission of supporting the medical needs of students while helping sustain their well-being so that they might complete their academic goals. It was replaced in 2008 by the current Center for Health and Well-Being building located across the street from the original building and renamed University Health Service.
