Prepare to Meet the Challenges of the Ever-Changing World of Fashion Merchandising

A degree in Fashion Merchandising will always be in demand. You will be prepared for numerous careers along the global industry pipeline from fashion forecasting and apparel product development to visual merchandising and retail sales. If you have a knack for numbers, becoming a buyer or sales representative for domestic and international firms may be the right career path for you. If you have an entrepreneurial streak, learn strategies for establishing and operating your own business.

Your pathway to success begins with a focus on the core fashion concepts and skills necessary to become an asset in the apparel industry. This knowledge is enhanced with a minor in business administration or a focus in marketing or small business management. Program-free electives further enable you to explore other fashion-related subjects such as economics, journalism, theater, art, a foreign language, or communications media. Many students also participate in a professional internship to gain real-world experience and earn academic credit at the same time.

Why Fashion Merchandising?

Fashion trends will always be with us. New brands emerge and pave the way for apparel product development, management, sales, and ownership possibilities. What will you be wearing tomorrow? An IUP Fashion Merchandising degree will prepare you for the challenges in the ever-changing international and domestic apparel industry.

The World Needs Fashion Merchandising Majors

A changing global community requires modern minds to fully appreciate new trends, styles, and business models. Apparel construction, human behavior, quality control, and distribution strategies demand fresh minds with a flair for creativity and grasp of aesthetics.

With a degree from IUP you will have the industry communication skills and the ability to mesh with team members, highly sought-after attributes in the challenging fashion merchandising industry.

Expected Outcomes With an Undergraduate Degree in Fashion Merchandising

The IUP program emphasizes merchandising, but it does not end there. Choose also from courses that teach apparel production and distribution, textiles, apparel merchandising and promotion, ready-to-wear analysis, and quality control in textiles.

A fashion merchandising degree from IUP sets you apart:

  • IUP is one of the few public schools that offers a comprehensive education in fashion.
  • Master all aspects of the fashion industry and multiply your professional advancement expectations.
  • Grasp the “hot” topic of environmental sustainability and put yourself on the forefront of modern manufacturing.
  • Mingle with an international student body and build a network of contacts and sensibilities that naturally develop your global perspective.
  • Clothe the world in new business perspectives: analytical and critical thinking skills are incorporated in the course content.

The IUP Difference

Co-op program. IUP is the rare public school that offers a Fashion Merchandising degree. Besides study abroad opportunities, freshmen students with an interest in apparel or accessory design may apply to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City during their sophomore year.

Cultural diversity. At a time when global expansion is the norm for many fashion corporations, students are exposed to numerous cultures both in and out of the classroom at IUP. By sharing business, style, and education experiences with students from China, Taiwan, and Japan, you begin to see the world through a new lens. An exchange program with a Korean university is also available.

4+1 Program. As a fashion merchandising major you may also complement your studies by choosing from options provided through the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology, including a minor in business administration or a course focus in marketing or small business management. Many fashion merchandising majors also choose to double-major in both fashion merchandising and marketing to enhance their education further. Ambitious students also choose to participate in the new 4+1 program and earn their MBA degree in five years.
