The mission of the Human Development and Environmental Studies Department is to prepare individuals to support human and environmental needs and to perform professionally in a changing, diverse, technological, and global society.

The department is composed of programs that are interdisciplinary and share humanistic values. All majors have an applied focus and stress critical thinking, problem solving, professional judgment and ethics, decision making, and synthesis of information.

There are four programs: Child and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Fashion Merchandising, and Interior Design.
