IUP Haven Project

The Haven Project is designed to increase and improve counseling and advocacy services for students who experience violence. The Haven Project also offers prevention education about stalking, dating/relationship violence, and sexual assault. It is a collaboration with University Police, the Pennsylvania State Police, Indiana Borough Police, the Alice Paul House, and the Center for Health and Well-Being's Haven Project and The Counseling Center.

Counseling and advocacy services supported by Grant Number 2009-WA-AX-0013, awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice.

Why The Haven Project?

In 2002, the Center for Student Life and a marketing class conducted an on-campus survey of students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Researchers found that 87 percent of the students surveyed indicated that sexual assault was a concern among students on campus. In addition, 67 percent of those surveyed reported knowing someone who had been sexually assaulted. However, in 2002, only seven cases of forcible sex offenses were reported to University Police officials. As a result, the Haven Project was developed and designed to work to eliminate sexual and other violence on campus and to help students access needed services.
